AVILA
On the Adaja River about 70 miles northwest
of Madrid, Avila is best known for its well-pre-
served medieval wall with 80-plus semicircular
turrets that surround the town. While many
other European cities plundered these walls for
building materials or demolished them to to
make room for growth, Avila kept the wall first
to ward off attacks and later as a tourist draw. It
is so well preserved, it almost looks like a movie
set. In fact, it has starred in many Hollywood
films over the years.
