Walk This Way
The Causeway Storyteller
is arms propelled in a fluid motion, bat-
tling chilling gusts of North Atlantic Ocean
Hcurrents whipping along the shoreline.
Pointing to the right toward the chimneys of the
legendary Irish giant, Finn McCool, and then revers-
ing toward the Irish Sea, he began narrating “our
best story” that of McCool and the creation of the
Giant’s Causeway. His body moved in unison with
the legend as the scenes changed, stooping low
depicting McCool’s size 93 shoe, and rising high
cupping his mouth emulating the roar of McCool’s
nemesis Scotsman Benandonner, “I see him!” His
voice chronicled mystery, deception, intrigue and
joy as his animation continued nearly seven min-
utes. And although this tale idyllically answered the
query of how the 40,000 perfectly fitted hexagon
basalt columns were created, reality told us that
it was volcanic activity some 50 million years ago
that was responsible for this marvel. You’ll hear
both sides of the story when you walk this way with
Mark Rodgers.
Rodgers’ story of the Causeway Coast
begins at the ruins of Dunluce Castle
which was constructed on the coastal
cliffs around 1500 by the family Mac-
Quillan. Hands spread wide, Rodgers
shows the width of one of the many
fireplaces used to keep the families
warm.
