La Bobia
A year ago, we stumbled on to a small family-
owned restaurant, La Sidreria, next to the castle
in Santa Pola, just south of Alicante. It was the
first time we savored dishes from the Asturias
area in far northern Spain, and we loved them.
The most memorable dish was cachopo, a huge
veal steak stuffed with cheese, ham, foie gras
and other tasty bits, breaded and deep-fried to a
golden perfection. A cousin of chicken fried
steak, one of Ron’s favorites, we now seek it out
on menus where ever we are in Spain.
Madrid, we discovered, had plenty of Asturian
restaurants, and we had another grand feast at a
restaurant, La Bobia, just a block away from our
La Latina apartment. Its specialty was typical
Asturian dishes such as fabada, a bean stew
studded with sausages, cabrales, blue cheese
croquettes, and to Ron’s delight, cachopo. Enjoy
all on the restaurant’s patio.
