In 1942, after the railway and the tracks were
no longer in use, they were dismantled and sent
to Egypt and used by the Allies in their military
missions. The "hotel" remained standing, and so
did the community center, which the New York
ballerina decided to restore into a set for her
very own Amargosa Opera House. "All I wanted
was to get away from the rat race (of New
York)," she explains in an award-winning docu-
mentary by Ted Robinson.
We had arrived in time for the daily tour at
9AM. No waiting for late comers, no change of
schedule. Marta instructed the tours should
take place daily at 9AM and 6PM, and the own-
ers continue to respect her wishes.
In her younger days, the ballerina danced in
the Radio City Corps de Ballet and the Zigfield
