For lunch higher altitudes are calling
again. The cable car takes me to the Ros‐
nerköpfl mountain station at 3937 feet
where not only the best views in the area
await but also the Auszeit Restaurant. Sit‐
ting outside in the basking sun and shed‐
ding layer after layer, it’s time to try one
of Austria’s most famous dishes: the
Kaiserschmarrn. A sweet fluffy pancake
made with rum-soaked raisins is torn into
bite-sized pieces, caramelized, and served
sprinkled with powdered sugar, and pre‐
serves, in this case plum sauce.
“Many eco-farmers in the valley still fol‐
low tradition: milking their cows, churning
butter, making jam, baking bread”, says
local Waltraud Steiger as I jump on her
horse carriage drawn by stallions Hugo
and Storm. “But these days you cannot live
from farming alone. Often rental accom‐
modation is part of the family income. In
the 1970s some village children had to give
up their rooms for paying guests. Luckily
those days are over”.
Despite being small in size, Werfen‐
weng is booming with t wo new hotels
and an underground car park in the
works. Sitting in my chalet with the val‐
ley spread out before me, I come to re‐
alize that the balance bet ween tradition
and progress is key in this beautiful
part of Austria where the mountains
keep calling.
