lence and was only curiosity. Or maybe it was
malevolent curiosity.
Whatever it was, the bison strode across the
road and sauntered off to join his mates in their
idyllic bison picnic. Maybe he would scare up a
game of bison touch football. Or bison badminton.
Meantime my wife and I caught our breaths and
calmed our heartbeats to a normal pace before
driving off. And now I must forever endure
Kathie’s claim that she saved me from being gored
to death by a marauding rogue bison. She insists to
this day that I owe her my life. She may be right
about that.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park is located in
western North Dakota. Best accessed off Inter-
state 94 at Medora, the park consists of three sec-
tions: 46,000 acres in a southern unit, 24,000
acres in a northern unit, and Elkhorn Ranch, where
Theodore Roosevelt took up ranching in the
1880s. Noted for its natural badlands, the park is
home to three hundred to seven hundred bison
and many other species of wild animals.
